About Wellness
A healthy balance of the mind, body and spirit that results in an overall feeling of well-being.
Wellness has been described as an active process of becoming aware of and making choices toward a more successful existence. It is the pursuit of a higher state of health and function. The World Health Organization defines Health as the state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.
Wellness is a view of health that emphasizes the state of the entire being and its ongoing development.
Background
In it’s inception in the middle of the industrial revolution, wellness, was thought to be a luxury pursuit of the more affluent societies because it involves managing the body state after the basic needs of food, shelter and basic medical care have already been met. Ironically, many practices applied in the pursuit of wellness, were in fact, aimed at controlling the side effects of affluence, such as obesity and inactivity.
The phrase high level wellness was brought back into mainstream culture in the 1950s by H.L.Dunn M.D., who defined wellness as: “an integrated method of functioning which is oriented toward maximizing the potential of which the individual is capable. It requires that the individual maintain a continuum of balance and purposeful direction within the environment where he is functioning.” He also stated “wellness is a direction in progress toward an ever-higher potential of functioning”.
Today there is a better understanding that the pursuit of wellness if done prior to signs and symptoms of ill-health and disease, acts a measure of prevention, and that if one does experience illness or infirmity, that the traditional medical methods alone are not enough.
Complementary and Alternative modalities add on years to our life, and life to our years.
Programs
Reflections Wellness Studio is here to help those interested in optimizing their already good state of health as well as people interested in recovering from ill health or specific health conditions. Many factors contribute to wellness: living in a clean environment, eating organic food, regularly engaging in physical exercise, high level of flexibility, uncluttered mind chatter, clear nervous system, balance in career; family; and relationships, and developing spiritual/religious faith.
Our programs generally begin with passive, therapist-based modalities of chiropractic, massage therapy and acupuncture, to release the physical barriers such as, trigger points in muscle and fascia, low qi flow in meridians, hyper tonicity of nerves, ligaments and tendons. Once these barriers have been cleared, the more active, client-based modalities of Pilates, Aikido, Qigong and Life Coaching are applied, allowing individuals to take increased responsibility for their health behaviours and a supportive environment.
Some well known wellness promoters are Deepak Chopra, Michael Roizen, Mehmet Oz, Don B. Ardell, John Travis, David F. Duncan, and Andrew Weil
